Robbie Fowler, still the fourth-highest goalscorer in the history of the English Premier League despite retiring from that competition towards the end of 2008, has signed a one-year contact with defending Thai Premier League champions Muang Thong FC for a reported fee of $660,000. This will make him the highest paid player in Thailand's professional league.
Fowler, who scored 120 goals for Liverpool from 1993-2001, also played for Leeds, Manchester City, Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers before transferring to Asia to play with the A-League's North Queensland Fury (2009–2010) and Perth Glory (2010–2011).
Muang Thong's deputy president, Viluck Lohthong, said he hopes by signing Fowler, the club can improve from its current third position in the TPL and deny current league leaders Buriram PEA the TPL crown.
“I haven’t played for a couple of months but I will be fit enough when the league restarts. I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Fowler. “Muang Thong United is a big team and play good football.”
