Addressing the Global Forum for Sport and Environment in Lausanne, Switzerland, the United Nations Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, Adolf Ogi, congratulated the International Olympic Comittee and the world football body, FIFA on their efforts to make major sports events greener. The event, every two years by the United Nations Environment Program and the Japan-based Global Sports Alliance, included participants from international sports organisations, sporting goods manufacturers, the media and sports personalities.
The forum included the launch of the Torino Olympics Final Sustainability Report and the 2006 FIFA Green Goal Legacy Report, which highlighted how measures including renewable energy at stadiums and the use of public and non-motorised transport by fans achieved significant greenhouse gas emission reductions.
