Through a Rs 1.9 million special project sponsorship from the Football Federation of Sri Lanka, the newly formed Hambantota District Sports Development Foundation will redevelop the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Tangalle and construct two other football and athletic stadia in Beliatta. "When we spoke to the Asian Football Confederation Vice President and former FFSL President Manilal Fernando, he willingly came forward to support us. It will be a big boost for the development of soccer in Southern Province," HDSF Deputy President SSP Upali Hewage told Daily News.
The FFSL will also launch programs to further popularise the sport in the district including a three-day workshop for 18 leading schools at Rajapaksa Vidyalaya, Weeraketiya, from 27 January. Each school will also receive football gear to promote the game at the junior and intermediate levels.
